Removes bone from the back of the lower spine to reach and clear away a mass sitting outside the covering of the spinal nerves, such as a cyst, an abscess, or a collection of blood. It is done to take pressure off the nerves and, where infection is the cause, to drain it. The material removed is sent for testing.
