Surgery to drain a fluid-filled cavity that has formed inside the spinal cord and is pressing on it from within. Part of the bone at the back of the spine is removed, the cavity is opened, and a small shunt tube is placed to carry the fluid away into another body cavity where it is absorbed. It is done to halt worsening weakness, numbness, or pain.
