Removes the bony arch at the back of the vertebrae along a longer stretch of the spine than the more limited version, opening up the spinal canal to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves inside it. It is used when narrowing affects several neighbouring levels. The discs and the small joints between the vertebrae are left in place.
