Removes the bony arch at the back of the vertebrae over a short stretch of the spine, opening up the spinal canal so the spinal cord and the nerves inside it are no longer squeezed. It is used when the canal has narrowed and is causing pain, numbness, or weakness. The discs and the small joints between the vertebrae are left in place.
