A clinician holds a programming device over an implanted drug pump to check that the pump and its alarms are working and to review what it is set to deliver, then adjusts those settings. The pump delivers medication for pain or muscle spasticity into the spine, either into the fluid around the spinal cord or into the space just outside its covering. The medication reservoir is not refilled during this visit.
