Takes out a pump or fluid reservoir that sits in a pocket under the skin and was implanted to deliver medicine into the spinal fluid or the space just outside it. The surgeon opens the pocket, disconnects the device, and lifts it out. It is done when the device is no longer needed, has failed, or has become infected.
