Creates a drainage pathway for the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, using a soft tube placed into the fluid space and tunneled under the skin to somewhere the body can absorb the fluid. It relieves the pressure that builds when fluid accumulates faster than it can be reabsorbed. It is done under general anesthesia and the tube is intended to stay in place long term.
