Creates a new drainage route for spinal fluid that is trapped inside the fluid chambers of the brain, using a tube that carries the fluid to the natural fluid space at the base of the skull. Relieving that build-up lowers pressure inside the head. It is used for hydrocephalus, in which fluid collects because its normal pathway is blocked.
