Surgery to lift a piece of skull that has been driven inward by an injury back into its proper position, together with repair of the tough membrane covering the brain and removal of damaged or contaminated brain tissue where needed. Lifting the bone relieves pressure on the brain, and closing the membrane keeps spinal fluid in and infection out. It is done urgently after a significant head injury.
