Surgery to treat a bulging weak spot on an artery in the brain by working on the carotid artery in the neck rather than opening the skull. A clamp is placed around the neck artery and tightened in stages, gradually reducing the flow and pressure reaching the aneurysm so it is less likely to burst. Tightening it slowly gives the brain time to build up blood supply from other vessels.
