A thin tube is threaded through a blood vessel up into the brain and a small balloon is gently inflated inside an artery that has clamped down, reopening it so blood can flow normally again. It is most often needed after bleeding around the brain, when arteries go into spasm and threaten a stroke. Treating further arteries in the same session is billed separately.
