When several of the fibrous joints between an infant's skull bones have fused too early, the skull cannot grow with the brain and the head becomes badly misshapen. In this extensive operation the surgeon takes off and reshapes large sections of the skull, making multiple cuts in the bone to recontour it, and uses pieces of the child's own bone as grafts to fill and support the rebuilt shape. It is carried out by a specialized surgical team, typically within the first year of life.
