Opens and reshapes a section of skull bone in an infant whose skull plates have joined together too early, at the front or the side of the head. Releasing and remodeling the bone lets the growing brain expand normally and corrects the head shape the early fusion has produced. It is done under general anesthesia in specialist centers, with a hospital stay and close follow-up as the child grows.
