Opens the skull and removes part or all of the temporal lobe, the region of brain lying above and behind the ear, to stop seizures that begin there and have not been controlled by medication. Testing beforehand identifies the temporal lobe as the source of the seizures. Many people become free of seizures afterwards or have far fewer of them.
