A narrow hole is made through the skull with a hand drill so a thin tube or a monitoring device can be passed into the brain or the fluid spaces inside it. It is most often used to place a pressure sensor or a drainage tube after a head injury, a bleed, or dangerous swelling. Only a small opening is made rather than opening the skull.
