A needle is passed through the skin into an implanted shunt tube or its reservoir so that fluid can be drawn off, or medicine or dye can be injected. Testing the fluid can show whether the shunt is infected or blocked, and drawing fluid off can relieve pressure. It is done in a clinic or at the bedside rather than in an operating room.
