Removes the thymus gland from the front of the chest through the breastbone or between the ribs, together with a thorough clearance of the surrounding fatty tissue and lymph nodes in the middle of the chest. The wider clearance is used when a thymus tumor may have spread into neighbouring tissue. It is a major chest operation.
