Removes a thyroid gland that has grown downward behind the breastbone, working through an incision low in the neck. The enlarged gland is freed from the structures around it and lifted up and out through the neck opening. It is done when a large goiter presses on the windpipe or swallowing tube, or when the gland itself is diseased.
