Removes the uterus and cervix through an abdominal incision, together with the upper part of the vagina, and takes samples of lymph nodes from the pelvis and from alongside the main artery in the abdomen. The tubes and ovaries may be removed as well. It is done when cancer is known or suspected, so the extent of the disease can be assessed.
