This procedure places a small device inside the uterus and vagina to hold radioactive material in position for internal radiation treatment, most often used for cervical or uterine cancer. It is a preparatory step that positions the applicator; the radiation treatment itself is delivered afterward. It is done under anesthesia or sedation.
