This procedure uses a magnifying lighted scope to closely examine the external genital skin, called the vulva, and takes one or more small tissue samples during the exam. It is used to investigate abnormal areas of skin, persistent symptoms such as itching or pain, or findings noticed on a prior visual exam. The samples are sent to a laboratory to check for infection, precancerous changes, or other conditions.
