A fine scope is passed through the urethra, bladder and ureter and up into the urine-collecting channels within the kidney itself, to open a narrowing there. The tight segment is opened with a balloon, a cutting instrument or a laser so urine can drain out of that part of the kidney. A stent is usually left in place for a period afterwards.
