A thin lighted scope is passed through the urethra into the bladder and a fine catheter is threaded up the ureter as part of the service, so that a stone lodged in that tube can be nudged or repositioned, for example pushed back toward the kidney, without being taken out. It is done to relieve a blockage or to set the stone up for a later treatment. The scope stays in the bladder rather than traveling up the ureter, which is a different operation.
