A doctor passes a thin lighted scope through the urethra to view the inside of the bladder and urethra, then gently stretches the bladder wall as part of the exam. This stretching step is used to help diagnose interstitial cystitis, a chronic bladder condition that causes pelvic pain and a frequent urge to urinate. The procedure is done under general or regional anesthesia so the bladder can be filled and stretched without discomfort.
