A scope is passed through the urethra into the bladder and a fine tube is guided up the ureter, the tube draining the kidney. A small brush is then passed through it to scrape cells from a suspicious area in the ureter or the kidney's collecting funnel for laboratory examination. No cut in the skin is needed.
