Open surgery in which the bladder is opened so the surgeon can reach and take out a stone lodged in the ureter, the tube that carries urine down from the kidney. It is used when the stone is stuck near the bladder and cannot be cleared by less invasive means. The bladder is then closed and drained while it heals.
