Destroys a tumor in one kidney by passing needle-like probes through the skin into the growth under imaging guidance and freezing it, so the tumor cells die and are gradually absorbed. There is no incision and the kidney itself is kept. It is used for small kidney tumors, particularly in people for whom removing part of the kidney would be risky.
