Infant Groin Hernia Repair, Trapped Hernia

South Carolina rates for HCPCS 49496

Repairs a groin hernia in a very young infant when the bulging tissue has become stuck outside the abdominal wall and cannot be pushed back, or when its blood supply is being pinched off. The surgeon frees the trapped tissue through an open incision, checks that it is healthy, returns it to the abdomen and closes the weak spot, under general anesthesia. Because trapped tissue can be damaged quickly, this is treated urgently rather than as a planned repair.
