A feeding tube is placed through the skin of the abdomen directly into the small intestine, using live x-ray pictures and contrast dye to guide it into position. It allows nutrition and medicines to be given past the stomach for people who cannot eat enough by mouth or who bring stomach contents back up. No open operation is needed.
