This is a procedure to remove excess fluid that has built up in the abdominal cavity, using a needle or small catheter inserted through the belly wall based on physical examination alone, without ultrasound or X-ray guidance. The fluid may be removed to relieve pressure and discomfort, or sent to a laboratory to help find the cause of the buildup. It can be done for either relief of symptoms or diagnostic testing.
