Drains a pocket of pus that has collected just beneath the diaphragm, the breathing muscle separating the chest from the abdomen, through a surgical incision. The cavity is washed out and a drain is usually left in place. Such collections often follow abdominal surgery, a burst organ, or infection spreading within the abdomen.
