Open Exploration Behind The Abdominal Lining

Vermont rates for HCPCS 49010

An incision is made to reach the retroperitoneal space — the area behind the lining of the abdominal cavity, where the kidneys, major blood vessels, and nearby lymph nodes sit. The surgeon inspects that area directly to find the cause of a mass, bleeding, or infection, and may take tissue samples. The main abdominal cavity is not the target of the exploration.
