Reopens an abdominal wound from a recent operation so the surgeon can look inside and deal with a problem that has developed since - such as bleeding, a leak where the bowel was joined, or infection. The abdomen is inspected, the problem treated, and the wound closed again. It is an unplanned return to the operating room.
