Removes the tail end of the pancreas, sometimes together with the spleen, and then joins the cut surface of the remaining gland to a loop of small intestine so its digestive juices keep draining. It is done for tumors, cysts, long-standing inflammation, or injury affecting that part of the gland. This is major abdominal surgery performed under general anesthesia.
