Surgery that reroutes bile by joining the gallbladder to a limb of small intestine that has been divided and brought up to it, so bile drains into the bowel when the bile duct is blocked. The lower end of the divided bowel is reconnected further downstream, which keeps food and digestive juices away from the new join. It is done to relieve the jaundice and itching caused by a blockage that cannot be cleared.
