Removes the gallbladder through an incision in the abdomen and includes an X-ray study of the bile ducts during the operation. Dye is injected into the duct system and pictures are taken to show whether stones or narrowing are blocking the flow of bile. Finding a problem lets the surgeon deal with it before closing.
