A thin scope is passed through an existing drainage tract or tube into the bile ducts, and a narrowed section is stretched open with a balloon or dilator. A small tube called a stent is then left in place to hold the duct open. A narrowed bile duct blocks bile draining from the liver and can cause yellowing of the skin, pain, or infection.
