Opens up a badly damaged area of the liver, removes destroyed tissue and stops bleeding by sealing and stitching the raw surfaces, and packs may be left inside to press on the bleeding while clotting takes hold. It is the extensive version, used for deep or shattered injuries rather than a simple tear. Any packs left in place are taken out at a later operation.
