Removes a portion of one lobe of the liver, taking the diseased area with a margin of healthy tissue around it. The blood vessels and bile ducts running into that part are sealed as the tissue is divided, and the cut surface is checked for bleeding or bile leak. The liver regrows much of the lost volume over the following months.
