Takes a wedge-shaped piece of liver tissue through an incision in the abdomen so it can be examined under a microscope. The larger sample shows more of the liver's structure than a needle sample, and the cut edge is sealed to stop bleeding. It is used when a firm diagnosis needs more tissue, or when the liver is being inspected during another abdominal operation.
