A flexible scope is passed through the anus along the colon, and an ultrasound probe at its tip produces images of the layers of the bowel wall and the tissue immediately around it. This shows how deeply a growth or other abnormality reaches, which cannot be judged from the surface view alone. It is an imaging examination only; no tissue is taken during it.
