A flexible scope carrying an ultrasound probe is passed through the anus into the lower large bowel, the ultrasound looks through the bowel wall at deeper structures, and a fine needle is passed under that guidance to draw cells from a target within or beyond the wall. It samples lesions and lymph nodes that a surface biopsy cannot reach. It is done with sedation.
