A flexible tube with a camera on the end is passed through the anus to examine the rectum and the lower part of the colon, and small growths found along the way are taken off with a heated forceps that grips and burns them at the same time. The tissue removed is sent to a laboratory for examination. Because only the lower part of the bowel is looked at, the preparation is lighter than for a full colon exam.
