A short rigid scope is passed into the rectum and the lowest part of the large bowel so the doctor can see the lining directly, and growths found there are removed during the same examination. They are taken off with heated forceps or a wire loop, which also seals the small raw area left behind. The removed tissue is sent for laboratory examination.
