A rigid, lighted scope is used to examine the rectum and the lowest part of the colon, and during the exam one or more small tissue samples are taken for laboratory testing. This helps investigate symptoms such as bleeding, pain, or changes in bowel habits, or evaluate an area that looked abnormal on a prior exam. The scope is removed once the exam and sampling are complete.
