Takes out a growth from the wall of the rectum working through the anus, with no abdominal incision. The surgeon removes the growth along with the lining and the layer beneath it, stopping short of cutting through the full thickness of the rectal wall. It is done under anesthesia and the wound in the rectum is usually closed with stitches.
