Removal Of An Internal Small-Bowel Pouch

Takes out an internal reservoir that was previously built from the small intestine to store stool after the colon and rectum were removed, when that pouch has failed, become chronically inflamed, or can no longer be used. The bowel is not reconnected: instead the end of the small intestine is brought out through the abdominal wall as a permanent opening, so waste empties into a pouch worn on the skin. It is a major abdominal operation with a substantial recovery.
