Surgery for a bowel that was born without the nerve cells needed to push stool along, so waste backs up and the bowel above swells. The rectum is removed through both an abdominal incision and the area around the anus, most or all of the colon is taken out with it, and healthy bowel is brought down and joined to the anus. Several tissue samples are taken along the way to show where the nerve cells stop.
