Removes the rectum using both an incision in the abdomen and work from below at the anus, then brings the colon down and joins it directly to the anus so stool can still pass the usual way. Because the join sits very low, a temporary opening of the bowel onto the abdomen is often made to divert stool while it heals. The colon itself forms the new passage, rather than a reservoir built from the small intestine.
