Flushing the large bowel clean from the inside during an operation, before the cut ends are joined back together. Fluid is run through a tube placed into the bowel so stool is washed out and the join can be made on a clean surface. It is done in addition to the main bowel operation, most often in an emergency where there was no chance to empty the bowel beforehand.
